May General Meeting

MAY GENERAL MEETING
Thursday, May 16, 2013 7:30PM

Please attend our next general REC meeting which will be at 7:30PM on Thursday May 16, 2013 at the Eastmonte Civic Center located at 830 Magnolia Drive in Altamonte Springs, Florida.   We look forward to seeing all of you there!  At our Board meeting this week, we were also asked to present the following proposed resolution to our members for their consideration and approval at the General Meeting.  Please attend to voice your opinion and weigh in on the matter, either pro or con, and vote.  It reads as follows:

RESOLUTION CONCERNING COMMON CORE EDUCATION STANDARDS

WHEREAS, the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a set of academic standards, promoted and supported by two private membership organizations, the National Governor’s Association (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) as a method for conforming American students to uniform (“one size fits all”) achievement goals to make them more competitive in a global marketplace, (1.) and

WHEREAS, the NGA and the CCSSO, received tens of millions of dollars from private third parties to advocate for and develop the CCSS strategy, subsequently created the CCSS through a process that was not subject to any freedom of information acts or other sunshine laws, and never piloted the CCSS, and

WHEREAS, even though Federal Law prohibits the federalizing of curriculum (2.), the Obama Administration accepted the CCSS plan and used 2009 Stimulus Bill money to reward the states that were most committed to the president’s CCSS agenda; but, they failed to give states, their legislatures and their citizens time to evaluate the CCSS before having to commit to them, and

WHEREAS, the NGA and CCSSO in concert with the same corporations developing the CCSS ‘assessments’ have created new textbooks, digital media and other teaching materials aligned to the standards which must be purchased and adopted by local school districts in order that students may effectively compete on CCSS ‘assessments’, and

WHEREAS, the CCSS program includes federally funded testing and the collection and sharing of massive amounts of personal student and teacher data, and

WHEREAS, the CCSS effectively removes educational choice and competition since all schools and all districts must use Common Core ‘assessments’ based on the Common Core standards to allow all students to advance in the school system and to advance to higher education pursuits; therefore be it

RESOLVED, the Seminole County Republican Executive Committee, as stated in the 2012 Republican Party Platform, “do not believe in a one size fits all approach to education and support providing broad education choices to parents and children at the State and local level,” (p35)(3.), which is best based on a free market approach to education for students to achieve individual excellence; and, be it further

RESOLVED, the Seminole County Republican Executive Committee recognizes the CCSS for what it is– an inappropriate overreach to standardize and control the education of our children so they will conform to a preconceived “normal,” and, be it further

RESOLVED, That the Seminole County Republican Executive Committee rejects the collection of personal student data for any non-educational purpose without the prior written consent of an adult student or a child student’s parent and that it rejects the sharing of such personal data, without the prior written consent of an adult student or a child student’s parent, with any person or entity other than schools or education agencies within the state, and be it finally

RESOLVED, the 2012 Republican Party Platform specifically states the need to repeal the numerous federal regulations which interfere with State and local control of public schools, (p36) (3.); and therefore, the Seminole County Republican Executive Committee rejects this CCSS plan which creates and fits the country with a nationwide straitjacket on academic freedom and achievement.

Adopted by at least 2/3 vote of membership in attendance on May 16, 2013.

NOTE: EXCUSES FOR THIS MEETING: Please send your excuse online, or in the alternative for this meeting, send a quick email informing us of your absence to ahsgop@gmail.com

The Call

On 9-11, 2001, I was the CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of West Volusia. I remember watching in disbelief as the events of 911 unfolded. I recall feeling more bewildered than afraid. We had a Board meeting scheduled for that evening and decided to cancel because we all just wanted to go home. By the weekend, I was beginning to understand the magnitude of what had happened “in America and to America.” By Monday morning, feelings of fear and sadness and vulnerability had set in. The Chamber had a Washington-Fly-In scheduled for early October and after an email poll of the Board, everyone agreed that we should cancel our flights. Around 9 a.m. I called the Travel Agency to request flight cancellation instructions. Around 10:30 a.m. my office assistant came back to my office to tell me that Congressman John Mica was on the phone wanting to talk to me. I said “you mean his office”. She said “No, it’s HIM.” I could not believe that this Congressman who was leading the charge to get Wall-Street open and planes flying again could possibly , on this morning, be calling ME, a west Volusia Chamber Chief. As I answered the phone, the voice on the other end took my breath away. It was “HIM”, Congressman John Mica. I said “Good Morning Sir, you must be very busy today.” and the conversation went something like this. “Yes Linda I am busy . I’m trying to get the planes flying again and I hear you canceled your flights to Washington. Listen to me ! You are a community leader and if all the community leaders across America are too afraid to fly or come to Washington, THEY won. Do you hear me? The Terrorists won! This is what they wanted to happen. Now I want YOU to get on the phone and call the travel agency and confirm your flight plans. Call your Board and tell them to get on that plane and get up here. Can you do that? Your job is to lead and to inspire courage in your community and if any of your board says no, here’s my cell phone number .You call me and let me know who I need to call. Do you understand what you need to do and what’s at stake here? Tell me you won’t let our community become immobilized by fear.” By now, tears were streaming down my face. And choking back the tears, I replied,” Yes Sir, I understand. We’ll fly, We’ll be there. I promise I’ll get them all there. And Congressman Mica,” Thank You.” “You’re Welcome Linda.” and the phone was quiet. I couldn’t imagine how he knew I had tried to cancel the flight or why he took the time on that morning, himself, to call ME. In the years since, I’ve come to understand why. I took a dozen people along with people from other Chambers to the Capitol as planned in early October. We were one of the 1st groups to be allowed back into the Capitol. Met by armed guards surrounding the Capitol and all around us, I knew that America had changed. It was the first time I truly understood the meaning of freedom.. And suddenly in the warm Washington sunshine in front of the Capitol surrounded by armed guards, I realized how fragile Freedom is. Congressman Mica was fierce that day as heavily armed security guards tried to keep us out of various places in the Capitol. I understood that he was fighting with all he had to keep America free as he escorted us through the Capitol. I learned that day that for America to really be free, we must understand and fiercely love, cherish and protect those things that make us free and not just on the days that freedom is easy. I learned that we should never cower down and assume the role of a victim but instead to honor those that lost their life on 911 by demonstrating our courage and our strength and our love of Freedom, even in the face of unspeakable tragedy. I learned that courage and action make us free and that restriction, fear and inaction make us “less free.” I also learned that” Real Leaders” can and will in the worst of times empower and inspire individuals, communities and America. I am saddened and resentful of many of the restrictions and regulations that have been enacted since 9-11. I think many of those regulations have been unnecessary and have made America neither safer or stronger or more free. I believe those overreaching regulations have, like a thief in the night, robbed us of our joy and our individual wills to be courageous and resilient in the face of adversity. I hold the “Phone Call” in my heart as one of my greatest “Lessons in American Freedom” It taught me how each of us can make a difference when we choose action instead of fear. I now know that Congressman Mica knew that too the day he called. I hope this story will again inspire us to be bold and courageous as it inspired me and my Chamber Board of Directors on that day. Our Chamber closed in 2009. The only Visitors Center in West Volusia is now operated with tax dollars. 10 years later, I still choke up when I sing the last verse of the Star Spangled Banner “Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave” and I still remember “Let’s Roll” .

Governor Sandoval Addresses 2011 Reagan Lincoln Dinner

LAKE MARY – On Saturday, July 30th, 2011, the Republican Party of Seminole County hosted its 2011 Reagan Lincoln Dinner at the Lake Mary Westin. The Keynote Speaker was Governor Brian Sandoval, the 30th Governor of the State of Nevada, who is known nationally as a rising Republican star and who has gained attention for his commitment to business and conservative issues.

The dinner was attended by over 240 people with several candidates and elected officials in attendance. The event was also an extremely successful fundraiser for the Republican Party of Seminole County as it prepares for the 2012 election.

Elected officials who spoke at the event included Seminole County Commission Chairwoman Brenda Carey who discussed the challenges facing Seminole County as well as Florida Speaker Designate Representative Chris Dorworth and Representative Jason Brodeur who discussed the 2011 legislative session and the budget crisis.
In honor of the Centennial of the Birth of President Ronald Reagan, the Honorable Bill McCollum delivered remarks about serving in Congress during the Reagan Presidency and the legacy of one of America’s most beloved Presidents. A tribute video then followed highlighting some of President Reagan’s greatest speeches.

As part of his Keynote Address, Governor Brian Sandoval gave a stirring speech on the economic crisis impacting his state and the issues he has faced in Nevada as well as the issues facing all Governors throughout the United States. Governor Sandoval further touched upon President Reagan’s lasting impact upon his own life. Governor Sandoval concluded to a standing ovation by expressing his optimism about the future and his strongly held belief that by working together we will overcome the difficult times we currently face.

The event closed with two leading US Senate Candidates, the Honorable Adam Hasner, former Majority Leader of the Florida House, and the Honorable George LeMieux, former U.S. Senator, giving their perspective on the debt crisis and their respective visions for the future of Florida.

At the end of the event, the Governor made himself available to young and old alike to discuss their concerns about America’s future and for autographs. Those in attendance expressed what a truly inspirational speech the Governor had just delivered and that they were grateful to hear him speak. Upon the conclusion of the event, Republican Party of Seminole County Chairman Al Schwarz stated that he felt “we need more individuals like Governor Sandoval involved in public service and I look forward with great optimism his future as someone with the vision to make a positive difference in our country.”
